CHUMNEY CEMETERY Back to Top
This is a cemetery shown on the map as being located off state highway 114 north of Scotts Hill. I have been unsuccessful in finding this cemetery on my own. I was told circa 1992 told that the markers are knocked down and broken.
Two previous records of this cemetery exist. R. E. White recorded the cemetery circa 1975. His record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, p. 635. He describes the location of this cemetery as "East of Scotts Hill-Chesterfield Road, south of Eva Austin's home. Off Scotts Hill-Chesterfield Road, first gravel road to the east then south." This is referred to as White in the notes below.
Margarett Alexander recorded the cemetery on April 7, 1977. Although the Chumney Cemetery lies in Henderson County, her record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 112-115. This is referred to as UDC transcription in the notes below.
What follows is a composite of information from the two sources. In general, I find the UDC transcription to be the more accurate of the two. For this cemetery it reports far more markers. The information in the composite below comes from the UDC transcription if there are no major discrepancies between the two sources. If there are differences in dates, I list the information from both sources.

DOE CREEK CEMETERY Back to Top
This cemetery is located on Doe Creek Road several miles south of Scotts Hill. It originated as a Kennedy family cemetery created just after the Civil War but later became a community church cemetery. The adjacent log church, later used as a school, is in ruins. The cemetery is very interesting. The core of the cemetery retains a nineteenth century appearance even though the cemetery is still in use. There are rows of graves marked with fieldstone headstone and footstones. In most nineteenth century cemeteries which are still in use these fieldstones have been removed to make mowing easier. There may be over 100 unmarked and fieldstone marked graves.
The cemetery was recorded December 27 and 28, 1995 and updated December 27, 2001. Alicia Adcox, Anita Webb, Betsy Patterson, and Blanch Buck recorded this cemetery circa 1976. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 685-688. This is referred to as Adcox et al. in the notes below. Margarett Alexander and Blanche Tuten recorded this cemetery on March 31, 1976. Although Doe Creek Cemetery lies in Henderson County, their record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 204-210. This is referred to as UDC transcription in the notes below.

EBENEZER CEMETERY Back to Top
This is a church cemetery on Ebenezer Road near its intersection with Ebenezer Church Road. This cemetery is old. The earliest death date on a marker is in the 1840s, but the cemetery may date to the circa 1820 settlement of the area. (Carved markers generally were not used in this area until the 1870s.) There are many unmarked and fieldstone marked graves here, perhaps over 100. Many older markers are weathered and are unreadable or only can be read in the most favorable lighting. Try sunny winter afternoons when the sun is relative low on the horizon and off to the side. Good light is necessary for reading the older McCollum, Middleton, and White markers.
I did not note the date I first recorded this cemetery. It was in 1994, probably was May 16, and it was cloudy and rainy. Updated December 16, 2001, a bright sunny afternoon.
Anita Webb, Alicia Adcox, and Blanch Buck recorded this cemetery circa 1975. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 637-640. This earlier record is referred to as "Webb et al." in the notes below.
